Thailand Transportation

Visitors can enter Thailand by air, land or sea from countries throughout the region.
 
By air
Flying is the most convenient way of transport for traveling to Thailand as there are lots of direct flights from many countries in the world, both international and Thai airlines. Moreover, Thailand is the major hub for exploring the rest of Asia. Bangkok is Thailand’s main international gateway. There are also other international flights destined for Phuket, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui, Krabi. There are also smaller airports throughout the country serving domestic and sometimes regional routes.

Suvarnabhumi International Airport: Receives nearly all international flights and most domestic flights. It is located in Samut Prakan – 30km east of Bangkok.

Don Muang Airport: Bangkok’s second airport is used by Air Asia, Nok Air and Orient Thai (formerly One-Two-Go).

Phuket International Airport: International destinations include Seoul, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Abu Dhabi, Chengdu, Shanghai and other Chinese cities. Direct charter flights from Europe are also available.

Chiang Mai International Airport: International destinations include Kunming, Seoul, Hong Kong, Macau, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

By land
Thailand shares borders with Laos, Malaysia, Cambodia and Myanmar. You can get to Thailand via authorized borders with its neighbors.

By boat
You can cross into the country via public boat from the Andaman coast to the Malaysian island of Langkawi. All foreign-registered private vessels, skippers and crew must check in with the relevant Thai authorities as soon as possible after entering Thai waters. Although major ports throughout Thailand offer port check-ins, most leisure-boating visitors check in at Phuket, Krabi, Ko Samui, Pranburi or Pattaya.

How to get around Thailand

By air
Domestic flights around the country are easy, convenient and reasonable price, cutting down on journey times and often costing less than travel by car or rail. Most routes start from Bangkok, but Chiang Mai, Ko Samui and Phuket have a few ones to other provinces.

THAI, Bangkok Air, Orient Thai and Nok Air operate many domestic flights from Bangkok to provincial capitals.

By boat
The long-tail boats are popular transport on rivers, canals in Bangkok and throughout the country.

Car & motorbike
Normally, visitors who want to drive cars and motorbikes in Thailand will need an international driving permit, but this isn’t always compulsory.

Thai people drive on the left-hand side of the road. Be aware of the right side goes to the bigger vehicles. In Bangkok, traffic is chaotic, roads are poorly signposted and motorcycles and random contra flows mean you can suddenly find yourself facing a wall of cars coming the other way.

One thing you must notice when driving in other places is that there are many different types of transports going on the same road, making it quite dangerous. In villages, traffic may be less crowded but you have to cope with stray chickens, dogs and water buffaloes.

By bike
Biking is an ideal way of local transport, cheap, nonpolluting and slow, allows you see everything in your own pace. You can hire a bicycle from guesthouses for about 50B per day, but they aren’t always high-quality. Duties are high on imported bikes, you’d better bring your own bike to Thailand rather than purchasing locally. No special permits are needed for bring a bike into the country.

Train
The 4500km rail network in Thailand connects the four corners of the country with four main lines respectively and is used as the most convenient alternative to bus for long-haul travel north to Chiang Mai or south to Surat Thani. Train is also ideal for short trips to Ayuthaya and Lopburi from Bangkok.
