Also referred to as Thanlyin, Syriam was once a major port during the 15^th century then it was under the rule of the Portuguese in 17^th century as a base for the French East India Company and finally became part of the British Empire. In spite of being in close proximity to Yangon, it remains a quiet and peaceful town.
